Escaping from a Spreading Fire
- A spreading fire is very dangerous so make sure that you have two ways out of your house because if one of your exits gets cut off, you have another way you can take to escape and be much safer than trying to run through a spreading fire. Know what to do if you can not escape. You will need to plan your actions in case immediate escape is impossible.
- If possible, stay in a room with an outside window for easy escape if the fire gets too bad. Make sure you do not open the window to get smoke out because the fresh oxygen will make a trail for the fire to go in that direction. Always close doors between you and the fire. To stall the fire until help comes, think about what you could use to stuff around cracks near the door to prevent fire or smoke from entering the room. For example, you can use sheets, towels, curtains, or even large pieces of clothing.
- In addition to escaping, many fire experts believe that you should have a escape plan to get you and family out of your house. Many people do not realize the negative consequences of poor housekeeping, if you keep everything on the floor it can stall your escape to get out of the house. Furthermore, the objects on the ground can not only stall you, but could catch fire and spread easily. There should be a designated meeting spot outside where your family will meet. The family should practice this plan at least twice a month every month. Try to master the escape plan in under two minutes.
