What is fire?
- There are four components in a fire and if one of the four components is removed it has a chance of the fire being eliminated. The four elements are fuel, heat, oxygen and the chemical chain reaction that cause a fire. Oxygen is required for a fire to burn, heat provides the main power source which causes the fire to start. Fire is combustion or burning, in which substances combine chemically with oxygen from the air and typically give out bright light, heat, and smoke. Fire is a chemical reaction that releases light and heat. The display usually marks the meeting of a combustible material and oxygen, although other chemicals can spark flames as well. These flames occur when small particles of the combustible material are heated to the point of incandescence and shoot upward.
- According to some myths, it is believed that Prometheus stole fire from the gods and bequeathed it to humans. Prometheus is included in Greek mythology they are supposedly one of the Titans, son of Iapetus (also a Titan) and Clymene, an Oceanid. Aristotle defined fire as one of the four essential elements. Since its earliest known controlled use 1,420,000 years ago, fire has inspired stories and speculation.
- Early chemists believed that fire was caused by the liberation of a substance, philologist, found in every combustible material. Observations made in the late 18th century revealed a decidedly less mysterious ingredient oxygen was a big factor.
